24-hour comics are an invention of Scott McCloud. The premise, as you can read at his web site, is that you conceive, write, and draw a 24-page comic in 24 straight hours. If you don't finish the work in 24 hours, you can go with either the Eastman Variation (Kevin Eastman finished his opus in 40 hours) or the Gaiman Variation (Neil Gaiman ended his work where it happened to be at 24 hours). As I am not the swiftest of artists, I had to choose between the two. I chose the latter, writing the "D" in "THE END" at 3:17am on January 20, 2000, exactly 24 contiguous hours after I began. If you're about to read the comic, please keep in mind that I followed Mr. McCloud's advice to the letter, thinking up the comic as I drew it, proceeding blindly from page to page. I surrounded myself at my drafting table with a stack of books: art how-to's by Jack Hamm, the Griffin & Sabine trilogy by Bantock, comics by Mignola, Watson, Allred, and Fisher, a healthy dose of DK books (including one in particular), and a dictionary. To start the comic, I flipped open the dictionary to random pages, giving me the words "laceration," "rave," and "finger." Dictionary randomness also contributed throughout the comic, giving me the name "Marguerite" and references for a few of the potpourri of paintings in the gallery. I took before and after photos (52KB and 56KB respectively), and also used the camera to see how light flows over a face from below. Finally, after a trip to Kinko's to hold up my end of the dare, I scanned the images in two days later. The scans are very poor-quality, illegible, and wouldn't dither too well (I need better software), but they're there, it's done, and if I have time to go back and rescan them, I might. (But I probably won't.) After all was said and drawn, it was a tiring experience. It's fun in a strange sort of way: you learn an awful lot about your capabilities and limitations as an artist, and when you're done, you have something to brag about to your friends.
